WHAT IS THE BED SIZE OF A CHEVY SILVERADO?
If you’re considering buying a Chevy Silverado, no doubt one of the things you need from a car is a truck bed. Maybe you work in construction, or you need a truck that can carry any of the heavy loads commonly used on a farm. As a full-sized truck, the Chevy Silverado is definitely the type of workhorse you’re looking for. However, there are a few things you need to know to see if it can do what needs to be done. One thing you may be asking is “what is the bed size of a Chevy Silverado?”
We’ll take a look at this and other considerations in a moment so you can make the best decision possible.
What is the bed size of a Chevy Silverado?
It might surprise you to learn that there are actually multiple options when it comes to the bed size. Just like previous Silverados, the 2020 edition comes in three options:
Short bed: 69.92 in length by 71.40 in width for a total volume of 62.90 ft³.
Standard bed: 79.44 in length by 71.40 in width for a total volume of 71.70 ft³.
Long bed: 98.18 in length by 71.40 in width for a total volume of 89.10 ft³.
All truck beds are 22.4 in deep without any attachments like a topper or truck net.
As you can see, there’s almost an entire yard of difference between the short and long bed. The standard bed is closer in size to the short bed, although a 10 inch gain can still be handy.
The short bed has just enough space to fit a typical 6-person dining table. With a standard bed, you’d comfortably fit the table and the chairs. However, a long bed gives you enough extra space to fit in almost three additional washing machines (if that should be something you need).
What is the cabin size of a Chevy Silverado?
You can’t have your bread buttered on both sides. Some of the extra space you get with a longer bed will come straight out of your cabin.
For example, the long bed version is only available with a regular, single-row cabin. You can seat three at most, and it will be a bit of a squeeze.
On the other hand, the short bed only comes with a crew cab. This is a full-blown five-seater with an airy 43.4 in of legroom.
If both of those are too extreme, the standard bed version can fill in the gaps. You can get either a crew or a double cab with a standard bed. The double cab has less space in the second row with only about 35.24 in of legroom. That’s meant mostly for more people on shorter trips and may get uncomfortable for long-distance trips with three in the back.
So, you’ll carefully need to consider your needs when making this trade-off. The standard bed should provide a nice balance if you have modest hauling needs and regularly need to transport others for work. You’ll want a crew cab/short bed combination for a family car while a regular cab/long bed is the ultimate workhorse.
How much extra weight can a Chevy Silverado tow?
Beyond wondering what is the bed size of a Chevy Silverado, you might also be curious about what the vehicle’s towing capacity is. Good question! Unfortunately, the answer is a bit complicated as it depends on the exact trim you go for.
The lowest you can go is still quite hefty at 6,800 lbs of max towing capacity. Of course, you’ll have to subtract the truck’s weight which is about 4,369 lbs, leaving you with 2,431 lbs extra loading weight.
You unlock the maximum towing capacity with the higher-end 4WD models. These can tow about 7,300 lbs with the curb weight included. You can take this up a notch by using a tow bar or gooseneck hitch.
What accessories can I get for my Silverado’s bed?
To give Silverado owners as much utility as possible, there are plenty of factory accessories just for the bed.
There are a number of tie-down systems to choose from like ring fittings and push-up tie-downs. You can kit your bed out for carrying specific types of loads with a range of frame or rack storing systems for ladders or other awkwardly shaped equipment. There are also smart storage solutions like deep-well or side-mounted toolboxes.
You can even attach tents to your bed so that you don’t have to sleep on the ground or so you can keep your things dry.
Bed floor mats, covers, lights, and toppers are also available. It’s safe to say that no matter what your occupation is or what you need your Silverado to carry, you can outfit your truck bed to meet your needs.
Size isn’t the only thing that matters
And, the Chevy Silverado proves this. By giving prospective buyers a number of bed sizes to choose from, as well as a host of accessories, Chevy has provided a smart truck that can adapt to your needs. So, we hope that this not only answers your question “what is the bed size of a Chevy Silverado?” but also gives you a solid understanding of why this vehicle is such a fine workhorse.
