Winter brings harsh weather conditions to the roadways. When the snow melts, the aftermath of heavy snow, ice, and salt begin to show, wreaking havoc on your vehicle. Your vehicle is faced with rough roads and wet conditions which means proper tire care is key to keeping yourself safe and helping your vehicle last through the changing seasons. Your seasonal vehicle maintenance is important to us, so we have provided some essential steps when it comes to caring for your tires this spring, whether it be routine maintenance, a tire replacement, or a simple tire rotation. If you have any questions about tire care, visit the tire professionals at our Graff Chevrolet Okemos Service Center or visit our FAQ page to for more tips in the tire section.
Tires are one of the most important components of your vehicle because they connect your car to the road. Making sure your tires are in proper condition not only helps your vehicle run better and more efficiently, but it also keeps you safe on the road. As the spring weather arrives, use this tire maintenance checklist to prepare for the roads:
- Check Tire Pressure – As the temperature changes, your tire’s air pressure may fluctuate. It is important to get in the habit of checking your tire air pressure often since proper air pressure in your tires allows for better fuel economy, smoother driving, and is an important safety factor.
- Check Tire Tread – The tread on your tires is very important especially in wet road conditions. Appropriate tire tread helps your tires to grip to the road, keeping you in control of the vehicle, and helping you drive properly in wet conditions. Properly maintained tires can also help prevent situations like hydroplaning.
- Rotate Your Tires – Routine tire rotations assist in the process of maintaining your tires and allowing the tread to wear evenly. Your tires may have experienced irregular wear during the long winter months, but by regularly rotating them, your tires will last longer and keep you safer on the roads.
- Change Your Tires – Winter tires are great for your vehicle when it comes to ice and slick driving conditions. However, they may not be the best tires for the spring season. Switching to all season tires will give your car better fuel economy, a longer tread life, and a quieter ride.

Spring-cleaning is an important part of your vehicle’s maintenance and up-keep. After the long winter season, dirt, grime, and clutter can pile up on the exterior and interior of your vehicle. At Graff Chevrolet Okemos we want to make sure your vehicle is clean so that it’s not only ready for the warmer weather, but also so that it looks great for years to come. The interior can hold odors from trash, mud, salt, and other odors that have been brought into the car, while the exterior can collect dirt, gravel, and salt, which can cause long-term damage and rust. Below we have compiled some simple spring car cleaning tips to help you keep your car looking great by cleaning your car’s exterior and interior, and by learn how to scrub away winter weather stains.
Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Vehicle’s Exterior
First and foremost, a car wash not only makes your car look great, but also provides many benefits for your vehicle’s exterior. During the winter, your vehicle constantly drives through dirt, gravel, and salt build up. If these are left on your vehicle for long periods of time they can begin to erode your vehicle’s undercarriage and paint, which can contribute to exterior rust. A car wash is a simple solution to prevent any irreversible damage to your vehicle. Local automatic car washes are a great way to get in and out quickly. However, if you choose to wash your car at home we have a few tips to help you achieve that clean car look:
- Specialized car washing soap is recommended rather than regular dish detergent, which can be too coarse for vehicle paint.
- Use microfiber rags, soft sponges, or soft brushes. Avoid magic erasers on the vehicle exterior, as they're too abrasive.
- Dryer sheets are a great way to help get stubborn bugs and dirt off of your grill.
- The best way to remove tree sap is by using hot water and a soapy microfiber rag.
- Fully rinse your car and bucket before and after washing. Also, do your best to rinse the undercarriage.
- Rinse your tools and switch your bucket water often to prevent washing with old dirt.
- Wash your vehicle one side at a time so you can wash the soap away before it dries.
- Wax your vehicle! This is a step that’s often looked over, but it helps prevent dirt and grime from scratching your vehicle and can help with UV ray protection.
Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Vehicle’s Interior
Cleaning the interior of your car can seem like a pain, but that doesn’t have to be the case! As warmer weather arrives, you can use these spring-cleaning car tips to help make cleaning the interior of your vehicle easy and fun. Throw away the garbage, brush out the crumbs, and dust off your dash to give your next drive a nice refreshed feel. Cleaning your interior is just as important as cleaning your exterior. A cluttered vehicle can cause unnecessary problems in emergency situations or when you unexpectedly need to transport large items. Ultimately, we want you to be safe when you hit the road, but we also want to help you keep your car clean so you can protect your investment. Below you can check out some of our seasonal spring-cleaning tips for your vehicle interior:
- Clear clutter by removing trash and recyclables and disposing of them properly.
- Decide what items you really want to keep in the car. Switch out winter items for spring items, for example a shovel for a container of washer fluid.
- Use coffee filters to dust off your dashboard and plastic surfaces. Coffee filters and microfiber towels are great for gathering dust instead of spreading it.
- Wash the inside of your windows to get rid of streaking or finger prints. A vinegar-based solution with a semi wet microfiber rag is a great way to have a streak free shine. Take out all rugs and shake them to release any loose dirt and gravel. Vacuum your rugs, carpets, and seats to remove any crumbs or dirt. Air out your vehicle by driving with the windows down (weather permitting).
How to Get Salt Out of Your Vehicle’s Carpets and Mats
One of the most unsightly factors your car faces in the wintertime is the invasion of road salt into your vehicle’s interior. Even if you are careful with your shoes in the winter, the rock salt can still make it’s way into your vehicle and on to your carpet and mats. Salt can cause just as much damage to the interior of your vehicle as it can to the exterior. To prevent stains from road salt we recommend investing in plastic car mats, which are easily cleaned by a simple wipe down. However, if you have not invested in plastic mats, follow the steps below for how to remove salt from your vehicle’s carpets and mats:
- Fill an empty spray bottle with a 50/50 diluted water and vinegar solution.
- Spray solution on salt spots, enough to get the carpet slightly wet, and let sit for a few minutes.
- Use a clean dry rag to dab the wet spots. Don’t wipe or dab too hard, you want to have the dry rag absorb the stain that comes up.
- If the rag is wet and the stain remains you will want to switch it for a dry rag and continue the process.
- Once the spot is dry your stain should be gone. If the stain remains, repeat steps 2-4.

Spring Alignment Car Care at Graff Chevrolet Okemos
Winter’s snow and ice can damage roadways. So, when the spring season arrives your car will likely have to endure excessive potholes, beat up dirt roads, and bumpy gravel. Roadways with the aforementioned issues can cause alignment issues for your vehicle, and if your wheels are not properly aligned during the spring season your vehicle’s performance may suffer it could become hard to maneuver. Your wheels' alignment should be such that your vehicle drives straight and wheels run parallel to each other. Your vehicle can also suffer in gas mileage when your alignment is off because your car will have to work harder to move. Having misaligned wheels also causes uneven tread wear, which can cause you to need new tires prematurely. Your vehicle’s fluids may seem like an insignificant part of your seasonal maintenance routine, but they play an important role in the performance of your vehicle. Different types of auto fluids are used for different functions within your vehicle, but they each benefit your vehicle’s performance and efficiency in their own way. It is important to make sure all of your vehicle fluids are routinely inspected, flushed, changed, and topped off. By performing routine fluid maintenance you can help extend the life of your vehicle. As the spring season hits, you are more inclined to drive longer distances and spend more time on the road, so to keep yourself and your passengers safe, stop in to Graff Chevrolet Okemos where we can help with any auto fluid maintenance you may need. Below are just a few of the different fluids you’ll want to inspect this spring to ensure your vehicle continues to run properly.
- Washer Fluid - The vehicle’s washer fluid works alongside the windshield wiper blades. Your washer fluid is used to clear your windshield from dirt, grime, and anything that may obstruct your view through the windshield. It works to help you see the road clearly no matter what time of year. During the spring season remaining road salt and grime can mix with wet roads and cause an extremely dirty windshield. By making sure you have your washer fluid topped off, you will not only be able to clean off any residue, but also continue to drive safely. You can purchase washer fluid at any auto store, or we can top it off for you at your next appointment. Some washer fluids must be diluted with water before being poured into your washer fluid tank, while others come pre-diluted making them ready to use. The main factor to look for on the label is that the washer fluid is suitable for the climate you drive in, and in some cases includes antifreeze to ensure it doesn’t freeze in certain temperatures. If you have any questions on windshield washer fluid or maintenance, visit us at Graff Chevrolet Okemos.
- Oil Changes - Oil changes are an extremely important routine maintenance service that you should be attending to all year long. Engine oil is one of the most important components to keep your engine running well. The oil performs many functions including keeping your engine clean, lubricating moving engine parts, taking heat away from the engine, and protecting the engine against wear. It is recommended that you have your oil changed every 3,000 – 5,000 miles, depending on your driving habits and location. Synthetic oil can also play a part in when you change your oil, and may extended the time allotted between oil changes. Specific instructions on when to change your vehicle’s oil can be found in your Vehicle Owner’s Manuel. If you notice any oil problems or leaks, you can always count on the Graff Chevrolet Okemos Service Center to get your car running properly fast and efficiently.
- Coolant - Coolant is also known as antifreeze. Your coolant is an auto fluid composed of additives to help control the temperature of different engine components. The coolant’s main job is to keep the radiator in your vehicle from freezing or overheating through out the year. It is important to flush and change your vehicle’s coolant every two years or every 24,000 miles. If you suspect a leak in your coolant or your engine appears to be over heating, contact our experts.

We love when warmer weather arrives; however, when temperatures rise in the spring so does the probability of rain and fog. Wet conditions can make it difficult to see through your windshield and navigate the roads, especially during early morning and evening commutes. This is why it is very important to have the correct, and well maintained, wiper blades for your vehicle. Wiper blades are important to your driving safety all year, but rainy weather makes them crucial in the spring season.
Everyday wear and tear affects your wiper blades, so it is recommended to have them replaced every 6 months. The winter weather can especially be hard on your wiper blades with frozen temperatures and ice-covered windshields. Make sure to check the condition of your wiper blades each spring, so you can be confident they’re ready to perform when you need them. Below are some warning signs you may need new wiper blades:
- Wiper blades leave streaks across windshield
- You hear a squeaking noise when in use
- Wiper blades are not providing clear view of road
- Wiper have damaged or broken rubber blades
- For more information on your wiper blades and other vehicle services, visit our FAQ page in the Service section of our website.

The summer season is a time for hitting the road and traveling, but with the adventure comes hot temperatures that can take a toll on your vehicle. Make sure your vehicle is ready for the heat by servicing your cooling and A/C system at Graff Chevrolet in Okemos, MI. Both the vehicle cooling system and the air conditioning system are important when it comes to keeping you and your vehicle cool during the summer months, and throughout the year. Your cooling system regulates the temperature of your engine and protects it from overheating, breaking down, or damaging other components under your hood. The A/C system helps keep temperatures within the cabin of your vehicle at a comfortable level, especially when the weather gets hot. It is important to have both systems running properly so you and your vehicle don’t over heat this summer. Below you can learn the importance of both systems and know when to have each serviced.
Importance of Vehicle Cooling System Summer Car Care
The cooling system in your vehicle utilizes various components including a water pump located between the engine and radiator, and is responsible for lowering the temperature of the engine coolant, which in return keeps your vehicle at a steady temperature. Serious damage can result from high engine temperatures, which is why it is so important that your cooling system functions properly. If you suspect that any component of the cooling system is not working correctly, bring your vehicle in for service as soon as possible.
Here are some symptoms that your cooling system may need service:
- Temperature Gauge is higher or lower than normal. If your cooling system is not working properly, the needle on your dashboard temperature gauge may move out of the “normal zone”, or the half way point between high and low. A notable change in the temperature gauge can be triggered by a blockage of the cooling fan or by an incorrectly functioning component. If you notice this symptom with your vehicle, bring it in to our service center for a full inspection as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
- Your vehicle heater is not working properly. The heater in your vehicle utilizes the same coolant that runs through your engine. If there is something wrong with your cooling system or the flow of coolant, the air pressure of your heater can be affected, signifying a larger problem.
- There is a coolant leak. Anytime you notice a leak with your vehicle, you’ll want to be sure to bring it in for an inspection to prevent costly damage to other vehicle components. You can identify a coolant leak by the consistency of the leak since coolant liquid typically comes in bright colors, often times a yellow, orange, or pink. An internal coolant leak can be identified by a sweet scent within your vehicle.
- Your engine temperature warning light turns on. If your engine becomes too hot, the engine temperature light will likely turn on to notify you. It’s important to bring your vehicle into our service center as soon as possible because a cooling system problem can lead to an overheated engine that can also affect other components under the hood of your vehicle.
Having a routine cooling system inspection and coolant flush can help keep your cooling system running properly, which will ultimately extend the life of your vehicle. We recommend having a coolant flush every 24,000 miles or every two years. To learn more about your vehicle’ cooling system, visit our cooling system service page under the routine maintenance section of our website.
A/C System Maintenance for Summer Car Care
The air conditioning, or A/C system, in your vehicle becomes essential during the hot summer months because in the heat, the temperatures in the cabin of your vehicle can rise to over 40 degrees hotter than the temperature outside! Your A/C system helps keep you and your passengers comfortable while driving by pulling heat from the air within the cabin, pushing it out of the car through the radiator, and then passing cold air through the evaporator into the car. Ensuring your A/C system is working properly is important because it prevents you and your passengers from overheating in the summer season.
Symptoms of an issue with your A/C system include:
- A weak airflow from your vents. If your A/C system is providing a weak airflow, it can be the result of a hose coming loose, a broken seal on the ventilation system, a broken ventilation fan, or mold or mildew on the evaporator core.
- A lack of cold air from the vents. If your A/C system is not producing cold air, it could be due to a leak in the seal or hose, a failed switch or fuse, a failed blower motor, or a damaged condenser or evaporator. We recommend scheduling an inspection to establish whether the repair is a small fix, or a large replacement, depending on the cause of the issue.
- An A/C leak. An A/C leak is usually hard to detect, but if you notice low air pressure or coolant dripping from your vehicle, it’s important to bring you vehicle in right away since leaks in your A/C system can cause severe damage if they are not addressed. A/C leaks can be caused by the age of your system since over time, your hoses and seals can lose their elasticity allowing moisture to enter the A/C system.
- A bad odor coming from the vents. Another way to detect an issue with your A/C system is a strong odor coming from the vents. This can occur if you have a dirty air cabin filter or if mold has accumulated in the system. If you smell a bad odor in your vents, contact our service center for more information on our A/C deodorizer service.
If your A/C system is experiencing any of the symptoms above, bring your vehicle to our Okemos Service Center and we will take care of the issue so you can get back on the road. To keep your A/C system working well all summer, we recommend getting routine air filter checks to help your A/C system stay dry. To learn more about your A/C system you can visit our A/C system service page in the routine maintenance section of our website.

Understand the Importance of Your Vehicle Fuel System
The fuel system in your vehicle is a very important component to the proper function of your car, truck, or SUV. It stores the fuel used to run your engine and ultimately provides power to your vehicle. The fuel system is made up of different components including:
- Fuel Injector
- Fuel Lines
- Fuel Tank
- Fuel Pump
To help your vehicle run properly, the fuel system delivers stored fuel to the cylinder chamber where the fuel is vaporized and mixed with oxygen, undergoing a process that ultimately produces power for your vehicle to run on. When the gas pedal is pressed, the fuel pump moves the gas from the fuel tank through the fuel lines to the fuel filter and the fuel injector. The fuel injector uses pressure to send the gasoline into the engine’s intake manifold, from which it is delivered to the combustion chamber and produces power.
Keep Your Car Running Efficiently With Vehicle Fuel System Maintenance
If your vehicle experiences a fuel system malfunction, it will not only negatively affect the health of your vehicle, but it can you put your safety at risk. When a fuel system malfunction is ignored, it can also result in higher repair costs that could have been prevented. To help you avoid a severe maintenance situation, we have outlined some symptoms that will let you know if your fuel system is having any problems. - Check engine light turns on
- Irregular power loss occurs

When it comes to a vehicle fuel filter replacement, we recommend having one done every 30,000 miles, or every two years. You can also schedule a fuel system cleaning, which will remove fuel varnish build up, intake valve deposits, and cylinder head deposits. If you have never experienced any of the symptoms listed above, then it may not be necessary to have your fuel system cleaned. However, if you are still unsure about whether or not you should have your fuel system inspected, contact our team of knowledgeable technicians to learn more about your vehicle’s specific needs. The exterior lights of your vehicle are often overlooked when it comes to vehicle care, but they are a key component when it comes to your safety on the road. Your exterior auto lights include your headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. The lights on your vehicle are very important to be able to see what is ahead of you at night, and for other drivers to be able to see you and anticipate where you are going. In this section of our Summer Car Care Guide, you will learn the details of each exterior light on your vehicle, information on auto light bulb replacement, and the different types of auto bulbs you can purchase. Here are more details of each exterior light and how they help you on the road:
- Headlights – Your vehicle’s headlights have two different settings, low beam and high beam. Low beam is the most common setting, allowing you to be seen up to 150 feet away. The high beam function is useful when driving on rural roads, allowing you to be seen up to 450 feet away. Remember that high beams should only be used when no other vehicles are around because they can impair other driver’s vision.
- Taillights – Taillights are located on the back of your vehicle, separate from your brake lights. These lights can be seen up to 1,000 feet away when lit.
- Brake Lights – Brake lights are the red lights that illuminate when you press the brake pedal. You brake lights are located next to the taillights and on top of the rear of your vehicle.
- Turn Signals – Your turn signals are external blinking lights that are controlled near your steering column. Turn signals are used to alert the drivers behind and ahead of you which direction you are turning, left or right.
Additional external accent lights on your vehicle can include fog lights, running lights, side mirror lights, and license plate lights. Each of these accent lights are not included on every make and model, but if you do have these light features on your vehicle, it is important to have them working properly at all times. If you are caught driving with a burned out light, you run the risk of receiving a ticket.
Exterior Vehicle Light Bulb Replacement Tips
To stay aware of the status of your exterior vehicle lights, we recommend performing a monthly light check. Have a family member or friend stand outside of your vehicle as you turn your lights on. They can walk the perimeter of your vehicle making sure each light is on and running properly. If a turn signal light is about to go out, you will likely notice that the light will flash faster than normal, alerting you to have it replaced as soon as possible. Replacing a bulb can be done at home, however if you find it difficult to do, you can visit our team at the Graff Chevrolet Okemos Service Center and we will have your lights working in a flash. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you are replacing your exterior auto light bulbs:
- There are three different types of vehicle light bulbs that car manufacturers are able to use for exterior lights: Halogen, LED, and Xenon. Halogen lights are the most common, inexpensive, and last for long periods of time. LED lights are commonly found in energy efficient models because they use less power. Xenon bulbs are commonly found in luxury-style vehicles. Reference your vehicle Owner’s Manual for more information on which type of light bulb your vehicle uses. If you have additional questions about auto light bulb options, you can call the experts at our Service Center.
- The Department of Transportation issues approval for each bulb available to be legally used in vehicles. You must be aware that some vehicle manufacturers do sell bulbs that are brighter than what is regulated for main roads. However, these bulbs are often for off-roading use only.
- The Department of Transportation also regulates the colors of each exterior light. Drivers are not allowed to alter the regulated colors, and any change could result in a ticket.
- Some car manufacturers require you to replace the entire headlight kit when a single light bulb goes out. This is commonly done when using LED lights.
Remember to also check the direction your lights are aiming when replacing an external bulb. Each vehicle is different, so when it comes to replacing a bulb in your car, truck, or SUV, we recommend referencing your vehicle Owner’s Manual or visiting our Service Center to have any of your questions answered. If your vehicle’s lights are still not working after a blub replacement, this could be caused by a shortage in the electrical wire, or a broken component. If this is the case, the certified technicians at our Okemos Service Center can inspect your vehicle’s lights to determine the problem and get you back on the road in no time.

With the rough weather and road conditions we experience in winter and spring, the exteriors of our vehicles can often go uncared for. You probably know that maintaining your vehicle on the inside and outside are both important, but did you know that it can increase your car's value? Having cosmetic vehicle repairs completed this summer will not only make your car look good, but it will protect your vehicle for seasons to come, helping your vehicle retain its value. Summer is the best time to take care of these cosmetic fixes because you won't have to worry about road salt, snow, ice, and extreme potholes. Plus, with the longer days, you might have some extra time to get your car into our Collision Center. Below we've outlined some common cosmetic damages that can happen, and how they affect your car and its value. Some minor vehicle damages that can affect your car's value include:
- Rust: Rust forms from the interaction of water and oxygen on exposed iron, or alloy that contains iron, over time. Rust breaks the metal down and makes it weaker. Salt can expedite the rusting process, so repairing any rust on your vehicle in the summer will prevent any further damage in the presence of winter road salt. Repairing any rust spots will help to extend the life of your vehicle by preventing deterioration, and will make it easier to sell or trade your vehicle in the future.
- Chipped or Cracked Glass: When chips or cracks in your glass happen, it's extremely important to have them repaired as soon as possible before they spread further. In some situations, your auto insurance will even cover all or part of the repair. Cold weather can make existing cracks worse, making your windshield both hard to see out of and more vulnerable to further damage. This is why it's important to have all of your chips and cracks repaired in the summer, so that you can prevent further damage when winter arrives.
- Dings or Dents: If you're trying to sell your vehicle, or will want to in the near future, repairing dings and dents is necessary to get the best price for your car, truck, or SUV. Dings and dents can decrease your car's value, and can make it harder to sell or trade. To keep your car looking its best, and to prevent further wear, have your vehicle inspected at Hank Graff Okemos today.
- Scratched Paint: Scratches and chips in your vehicle’s paint not only age your vehicle and decrease the overall value, but they can lead to rust spots as well. Some scratches are easily buffed out, while others require a more rigorous repair process and specialized equipment.
If your vehicle has any of the damages listed above, we'd be happy to inspect them at your next oil change and let you know what we can do to help! We want to help you extend the life of your vehicle and help do what we can to retain its value with cosmetic vehicle repairs during your summer car care. You know how important it is to protect your skin from UV damage, but did you know UV rays from the sun can also damage your car, truck, SUV, or crossover? When it gets hot in the summer months, the sun’s rays can negatively impact the appearance of your vehicle’s interior and exterior, causing premature fading and wear. High temperatures in the summer can also cause your engine and other components of your car to overheat. Before it gets too hot this season, read more about the importance of protecting your vehicle from the sun in the summer. Make sure your vehicle is ready to perform this summer with our routine maintenance page or FAQ page.
Vehicle Sun Protection Tips for Your Summer Car Care
When your car sits in the sun for an extended period of time, the UV rays can cause problems and extensive damage. We’ve put together these sun protection tips for your vehicle so you can avoid any long-term damage and keep your car or truck running smoothly this season. Read our tips to extend the life of your vehicle and keep it looking great even after the summer is over.
- Purchase a Sunshade - Buying a sunshade for the interior of your car’s front and rear windshields is a great way to protect your upholstery or leather. Over long periods of time, the sun’s rays may cause your leather to crack or your fabric to fade. Sunshades not only protect the interior of your car, but they also keep the cabin of your car cooler during the hot months; keeping you and your passengers more comfortable when you get into the car.
- Regularly Wash and Wax - Keeping your car dirt and dust free is an easy way to prevent your vehicle from rusting. You can also go one step further and wax your vehicle regularly with UV protection polish to reduce sun damage and keep your paint from fading. We recommend washing your car, truck, or SUV on a cooler day when the exterior temperature of the vehicle is lower for the best results. It’s also helpful to dry your car with a soft towel, rather than letting it air dry, to prevent mineral spots from being left behind on your car’s paint.
- Cover Your Car - If you want to fully protect your vehicle from sun damage and other weather conditions, you can purchase a full size cover for your car. Full size covers are especially recommended for drivers who intend to leave their car parked outside for long periods of time. You can also minimize sun damage by parking in a garage or carport whenever possible.
- Clean the Interior of Your Vehicle - Keeping the interior of your car dirt and dust free is important during every season, but especially when the temperature rises. Dust build up can result in a sticky film when your vehicle is left in the sun for long periods of time, and dirt can scratch your interior finishes. Regularly cleaning the inside of your car will prevent any buildup that could damage your car’s leather or upholstery.
Importance of Protecting Your Car from the Sun’s Rays
No matter what season it is, the temperature under your hood will always be high after you drive your vehicle. However, in the summer, added heat from the sun can increase the temperature under the hood even more. This is why it is especially important to understand why you need to maintain your vehicle’s fluids, belts, hoses, and tires during the summer months.
Maintaining the fluid levels in your vehicle is very important to keep your car operating properly at all times. During the summer, the higher temperatures can cause your vehicle’s fluids to deteriorate more quickly than normal, which is why it’s important to always check your fluids. Read more below about how the heat can impact your coolant, brake fluid, oil, and gasoline.
- Coolant:
Coolant regulates your engine temperature. When there is not enough coolant in your engine, or the coolant isn’t functioning properly, the engine can overheat and cause damage to other parts of your car. - Brake Fluid:
Having your brake fluid inspected during the summer is important because the increase in temperature can cause additional friction that can impact your brakes’ performance. You may feel a 'softer' pedal during the summer months simply because of the warmer weather, but do not confuse this with an unresponsive brake pedal. - Oil:
It’s always important to regularly maintain the oil in your car, however you’re more likely to spend additional time on the road during the summer months so a routine oil change can prevent an engine failure due to lack of oil. - Gasoline:
While today’s vehicles are designed to prevent excess gasoline evaporation from the fuel tank, there are a few tips you can still implement to ensure the greatest efficiency. For example, always make sure your fuel cap is secured tightly, try to park in the shade whenever possible, and buy gas early in the morning or later at night when the outside temperature is cooler.
Other parts of your vehicle to keep in mind when it comes to summer car care are the belts and hoses under the hood. High summer temperatures can cause additional wear on both of these parts. A cracked hose can cause leaks, leading to low fluid levels that can damage other vehicle components, while a snapped belt can cause your engine to stop completely! By having your belts and hoses routinely inspected, you can save yourself time and money down the road.
Summer’s high temperatures can also have an impact on your tires. When it’s hot outside, the pavement temperature rises which increases friction on your tires. This can cause your tire tread to wear faster than normal, so we recommend checking your tires regularly to prevent flats and unnecessary wear.
